Exit Through The Gift Shop
08/07/10 19:38
Exit Through the Gift Shop [Enzian Theatre]
I gotta see this movie! I’m interested in any exclusive footage or interviews with Banksy. For those in Florida, the feature film will be showing on Sept. 24, 2010 at the Enzian Theatre.
EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP is the critically acclaimed first feature film by the renowned British graffiti artist Banksy. Banksy, described by the UK press as a ‘British National Treasure’ is a graffiti artist with a global reputation, whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the Palestinian segregation wall in the West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP is the story of how an eccentric Los Angeles based French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy whilst in the US, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner with spectacular results. The film contains rare and exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview. It provides an incredible insight into Banksy’s world as he plans and executes one of his most audacious stunts at Disneyland.

Directors List
07/06/10 18:28
My updated list of favorite directors is now at 25. Obviously there’s more directors in the industry, but these artists are on the top of my list. I may not agree with every movie they’ve made and you may not agree with the name being on the list at all. The list is in no particular order, but i do have one all time: Stanley Kubrick. I chose Mr. Kubrick cause he never made a bad movie. You can’t count A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) cause it wasn’t completed by Kurbrick. In my opinion, Spielberg ruined the movie.

Florida Film Festival

Paper Man is the opening film at this year’s Florida Film Festival (FFF). Emma Stone (Zombieland) is one of the stars in the film. Lisa Kudrow (favorite TV “Friends”) and Jeff Daniels also star in this coming-of-middle age story. The film is directed by Michele & Kieran Mulroney.
The main feature is preceded by an Australian film entitled, “My Rabit Hoppy” from 2008. Directed by Anthony Lucas, his film “The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello” was the 2006 nominee for Best Animated Short Academy Award. I purchased the short-film from the iTunes Store last year. I thought how often do you see an original steampunk animation film like this? His later film, My Rabit Hoppy is sure to be disturbingly interesting. Instead of reading my slanted-promotion, just visit the Florida Film Festival website.

100th Anniversary of Akira Kurosawa

“100th Anniversary of Akira Kurosawa's Birth - Tuesdays in March.
A 26 movie tribute to possibly the most celebrated Japanese filmmaker of all time; highlights include early work such as Sanshiro Sugata (1943) and later masterpieces like Ikiru (1952) and Ran (1985).”
Too bad i don’t have cable television. I’ve seen all of Kurosawa’s samurai films, but I haven’t seen his later dramas. Maybe i should purchase Criterion’s AK100 set?

Black Dynamite (Enzian Theatre)
02/05/10 19:14
Enzian is showing Black Dynamite tonight & tomorrow only! I’ve already seen the movie (thanks Matt), but would love to see it again on the big screen as it was intended.
Showtime: 11:59 PM
Enzian.org:
“BLACK DYNAMITE is a kung-fu-fighting, pimp-slapping, gun-blasting, outrageously over-the-top parody of ’70s-era blaxploitation films that delivers big action and even bigger laughs like nobody’s bizness. An outrageous action comedy-spoof following the exploits of an ex-CIA agent (Michael Jai White) and full-time ladies man out to avenge the death of his brother against kung-fu masters, drug-dealing pimps and The Man. Meet Black Dynamite (Michael Jai White), the smoothest, baddest cat on the street. He’s a ladies’ man and the man with a plan. He’s also a former C.I.A. agent out to avenge his brother’s death. Whether he’s taking down drug dealers or sweet-talking foxy mommas, he’s the man on the streets out to stop The Man. Take a wild ride from the mean streets of the ghetto to the pool halls of the inner city, all the way to the “Honky House” with this bad-ass, tough-as-nails action hero.”

I cancelled service for cable television last month. Now I watch films more frequently than I ever have. A few Directors stand out for me. Here’s a list 17 Directors, i’d watch anytime! I’ll probably need to update this list eventually, but these artists are my personal picks.
AKIRA KUROSAWA
“Movie directors, or should I say people who create things, are very greedy and they can never be satisfied...that's why they can keep on working. I've been able to work for so long because I think next time, I'll make something good.”
MASAKI KOBAYASHI
“In any era, I am critical of authoritarian power.”
HENRI-GEORGES CLOUZOT
“Acclaimed in particular for his thrillers, Clouzot was one of the genuine rivals to Alfred Hitchcock, whose internationally acclaimed films 'The Wages of Fear' and 'Diabolique' are still listed among the best thrillers of Cinema.”
LARS VON TRIER
“I think it's important that we all try to give something to this medium, instead of just thinking about what is the most efficient way of telling a story or making an audience stay in a cinema.”
JACQUES TATI
“Life is full of homages to Tati. With films that are still difficult to see, with Tati dead, life must now pay tribute to his comic genius.”
ROMAN POLANSKI
“You have to show violence the way it is. If you don't show it realistically, then that's immoral and harmful. If you don't upset people, then that's obscenity.”
JOEL COEN
“The characters are the result of two things-first, we elaborate them into fairly well-defined people through their dialogue, then they happen all over again, when the actor interprets them. ”
WERNER HERZOG
“It is my duty to direct because the films might be the inner chronicle of what we are, and we have to articulate ourselves. Otherwise we would be cows in the field.”
ALFRED HITCHCOCK
“For me, the cinema is not a slice of life, but a piece of cake.”
JEAN-LUC GODARD
“A story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end... but not necessarily in that order. ”
GUILLERMO DEL TORO
“I like actors that are good with pantomime and that can transmit a lot by their presence and attitude more than through their dialogue.”
WES ANDERSON
“I know that feeling of looking back and thinking, that part I'd like to fix. So I obsessively try not to compromise.”
PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON
“I'll rebel against powers and principalities, all the time. Always, I will.”
JEAN-PIERRE JEUNET
“I wanted to make a fake Paris, a Paris of dreams, like in my head when I was twenty and I arrived in Paris for the first time. I wanted to avoid the bad things: traffic jams, dog shit on the street, the rain.”
STANLEY KUBRICK
“If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed.”
STAN BRAKHAGE
“There are a lot of movies made for nobody.”
MAYA DEREN
“The task of cinema or any other art form is not to translate hidden messages of the unconscious soul into art but to experiment with the effects contemporary technical devices have on nerves, minds, or souls.”

2001: A Space Odyssey - Enzian
11/23/09 22:34
The Enzian is showing 2001: A Space Odyssey this Tuesday night at 9:30 PM. It figures that I’d have to work until 9:30 that night. By the time I could arrive, it’d probably be twenty-minutes past start time. Can you imagine seeing such a movie on the big screen? I saw Dr. Strangelove at Enzian last year, and was delighted to see the movie in the format it was intended for. Too bad I might not be able to say the same for 2001: A Space Odyssey.
2001: A Space Odyssey
A four-million-year-old black monolith is discovered on the moon, and the government (while hiding the situation from the public) sends a team of scientists on a fact-finding mission. Eighteen months later, another team is sent to Jupiter in a ship controlled by the perfect HAL 9000 computer to further investigate the giant object—but on this trip something goes terribly wrong. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Director and (with Arthur C. Clarke) co-screenwriter Stanley Kubrick has created a visual and aural spectacle that stands as one of the greatest achievements ever put on celluloid. The film begins with the “Dawn of Man” segment, about the evolution of apes, and then ventures into the future, taking a look at what the world might be like in the first year of the 21st century. Kubrick’s film is a triumph of technological storytelling, with stunning sets and a brilliant, overwhelming soundtrack. Long dialogue-free scenes sparkle with indelible images backed by powerful orchestral music, culminating in an unforgettable, inscrutable tale of birth and rebirth, human evolution and artificial intelligence, the past and the future.

A Serious Movie
10/24/09 03:24
Choice movie to see, A Serious Man by the Coen Brothers. The title makes the movie sound like a melancholy drama flick, which one could say if you only factored-in the subject matter, but A Serious Man is just as much dark-comedy as it is drama. In my opinion, A Serious Man is a far more exciting film then "Burn After Reading" (which is the only Coen Bros. film I've ever disliked). Surprisingly, the opening night in Orlando, FL was not sold out, and it was only showing at Enzian theatre. Highly recommended and something i'll need to see again (hint: espcecially the opening sequence and how it relates to the rest of the film).
Black Dynamite
10/16/09 12:34
When “The Man” murders his brother, pumps heroin into local orphanages, and floods the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor, Black Dynamite is the one hero willing to fight all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.
