Tyondai Braxton's Central Market
Other Music [NYC]
Over the last few years, Tyondai Braxton (son of virtuoso jazzer Anthony Braxton) has gone from relative obscurity to media darling thanks to his association with post-post-rock rockers Battles. With that band he showed that there was life in rock music yet, infusing the genre with a creativity and hyperactivity the scene is still reeling from. Being one of the guiding forces in Battles, it was surely only a matter of time before his lofty ambitions were realized on a further solo effort (this is Braxton's second lone full-length), and ambitious Central Market certainly is. Composing for the Wordless Music Orchestra has obviously given Braxton a freedom he never had with Battles, and the chunky rock edge we associate with the band is all but lost in a flurry of lush cinematics and blurred electronics. The closest relative I can bring to mind would be Fantomas, not necessarily in the sound itself but in the scope and complexity of Braxton's compositions -- these pieces could have been chopped from 1/2" reels of 1940s Disney Soundtracks and assembled plunderphonic-style before being replayed by the orchestra. Sure, his vision is going to leave many listeners cold -- it's certainly polarized the OM office -- but Central Market is a vivid, Technicolor listening experience far removed from anything else you're likely to stumble across this year. Who knew modern classical music could be so damned playful? [JT]

* UPDATE: For the kids who like dance music and Chillin' Music.
"This Saturday night (September 5) there's a super-cool party happening at The Peacock Room in Orlando. Local deep house label Chillin Music is having its 5 year anniversary party and to mark the occasion they're flying recent collaborator Pezzner in from Seattle. I'm not sure if you know about Pezzner, one half of eccentric house music duo Jacob London, but he's one of my favorite working producers. His recent efforts for labels like Om Records, Freerange, and Urban Torque are inspirational, making him one of the few that I'll always check when seeing his name attached to a track. Rest assured you will hear some fantastic, forward-thinking house music playing in his set this Saturday ... sounds that should please the brain as well as the feet. I'm psyched.
I'm also psyched that I, Mr. Q-Burns Abstract Message, will be playing my own crazy tunes beforehand. And Chillin Music boss Rob Slac will be on hand for his own opening DJ set. Sweet." -- original message sent via Q-Burn's Abstract Message

How much of British producer Stephen Wilkinson is man, and how much is machine? How can he effortlessly slides from a slinky soul lick on an electric guitar to a soft, pulsating drum machine tied to a field recording of two children squawking about secret ingredients? For Bibio, boundaries were made to be transcended. Ingenious and slyly innovative, Ambivalence Avenue soaks the electronic arena with nostalgia and flashes of sweetness.

In Rainbows 2

A while back, I purchased the Radiohead “In Rainbows” Limited Box-set LP (vinyl album, art-work, and two CD-Discs). The first disc included ten songs that could be purchased online at any price. The album’s second disc included eight more songs. Of course with my luck, the second disc was defective and could not play. I tried to extract the music but was unable to get the data out. Long story short, I never got to hear what was on Disc 2. Update: “In Rainbows” Disc 2 now available. Peep the disk2 cover.

Record Store Day
On April 18, 2009, we should all go out to our local music store and purchase music on vinyl. Chairman demands it and so it shall be.
http://www.recordstoreday.com/
"This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on.
...
NOTE:
A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a physical retailer whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation. (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores—not online retailers or corporate behemoths)."

"Ratatat fuse hip hop beats with spectacular acrobatic guitar riffs as well as a satisfying amount of the blips and glips of electronica. And they do it well."

Isis
Doors at 8:00PM, $12.00 advance / $14.00 day of show, 18 and up. Tickets available at the Social Box Office, the door, and Ticketmaster locations.
The music of ISIS is a suitable metaphor for their 12-year career: patient, meticulous, fraught with tensionand gradually building towards an apex of seismic proportions. From the hypnotically bludgeoning down-tuned riffs of their early years to the gracefully sprawling passages on their pivotal sophomore album Oceanic and continuing through the intricate rhythmic textures and increased melody of 2006's In The Absence of Truth, ISIS have successfully navigated the process of growing and evolving without disavowing their initial vision.

Supreme Balloon
The lead song, “Rainbow Flag” moves with such comic and delight, that I swear I hear Danny Elfman. “Les Folies Françaises” sounds more like a Wendy Carlos-Matmos collaboration. The title song, Supreme Balloon floats around 24 minutes of manipulated synths and quirky rhythms. Mister Mouth would please IDM kids or any fan of Mr. Ozio or Maurice Fulton.
* Extra Bit: Current 93’s EP, “Black Ships Heat the Dancefloor” was remixed by Matmos and released back in June 08’. Check “The Beautiful Dancing Dust” remix.

“Depending on the agreement, the ISP will either forward the note to customers, or alert customers that they appear to be uploading music illegally, and ask them to stop. If the customers continue the file-sharing, they will get one or two more emails, perhaps accompanied by slower service from the provider. Finally, the ISP may cut off their access altogether. “

Señor Coconut
I love the sexy album cover! Upon closer inspection, I noticed something weird about it. I located a high-res version of the cover and found that it had been edited (probably with the clone-tool in Photoshop). Click on the picture above to view the high-res version. Look around the girl’s forehead. See the mistake. I saw different versions of the same cover on the web. Some did not show the editing mistake, while others did (including Apple iTunes).

Señor Coconut’s latest album, “Around The World” covers original songs from Daft Punk’s “Around the World” to Eurythmic’s “Sweet Dreams”. Señor Coconut travels through different places and time periods, but with a Latin style. Uwe Schmidt is a German who is currently living in Santiago, Chile. He has also used the alias of Atom.
