Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles are performing live at Firestone (Orlando, FL) on September 9, 2010. Bear in Heaven and local dj Diddles is opening. Doors are at 8 PM. All ages. Admission ain’t cheap. If you purchase from Park Ave. CD’s, you’d probably save money (Ticketmaster fees).

Yesterday Today

August 13, 2010, this is my last show for Yesterday Today on WPRK 91.5 FM. Because of a schedule conflict, i won’t be able to continue the show with Calvin (Secret Weapon). The show will continue, but i won’t be one of the dj’s on regular rotation. If you can listen tonight, then tune in from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The stream can be found in iTunes > Radio > College/University > WPRK 91.5 FM.

Also, be sure to purchase the after-party tickets before it's too late (many are sold out). Unlike the ACL Festval, the after-parties are held at indoor venues such as Emo's, etc...

Tyondai Braxton's Central Market

Tyondai Braxton "Central Market" (LP) on Warp

Other Music [NYC]
Over the last few years, Tyondai Braxton (son of virtuoso jazzer Anthony Braxton) has gone from relative obscurity to media darling thanks to his association with post-post-rock rockers Battles. With that band he showed that there was life in rock music yet, infusing the genre with a creativity and hyperactivity the scene is still reeling from. Being one of the guiding forces in Battles, it was surely only a matter of time before his lofty ambitions were realized on a further solo effort (this is Braxton's second lone full-length), and ambitious Central Market certainly is. Composing for the Wordless Music Orchestra has obviously given Braxton a freedom he never had with Battles, and the chunky rock edge we associate with the band is all but lost in a flurry of lush cinematics and blurred electronics. The closest relative I can bring to mind would be Fantomas, not necessarily in the sound itself but in the scope and complexity of Braxton's compositions -- these pieces could have been chopped from 1/2" reels of 1940s Disney Soundtracks and assembled plunderphonic-style before being replayed by the orchestra. Sure, his vision is going to leave many listeners cold -- it's certainly polarized the OM office -- but Central Market is a vivid, Technicolor listening experience far removed from anything else you're likely to stumble across this year. Who knew modern classical music could be so damned playful? [JT]

"This Saturday night (September 5) there's a super-cool party happening at The Peacock Room in Orlando. Local deep house label Chillin Music is having its 5 year anniversary party and to mark the occasion they're flying recent collaborator Pezzner in from Seattle. I'm not sure if you know about Pezzner, one half of eccentric house music duo Jacob London, but he's one of my favorite working producers. His recent efforts for labels like Om Records, Freerange, and Urban Torque are inspirational, making him one of the few that I'll always check when seeing his name attached to a track. Rest assured you will hear some fantastic, forward-thinking house music playing in his set this Saturday ... sounds that should please the brain as well as the feet. I'm psyched.

I'm also psyched that I, Mr. Q-Burns Abstract Message, will be playing my own crazy tunes beforehand. And Chillin Music boss Rob Slac will be on hand for his own opening DJ set. Sweet." -- original message sent via Q-Burn's Abstract Message

ACL After Shows

I found out that tickets for the ACL Festival 2009 were sold out. No single-day passes, no VIP 3-day (as if I could afford), or General Admission. I’m thinking it was the smart thing to buy early. Because of that thinking, I decided to buy the Aftershow tickets (Grizzly Bear & !!!) as well. This is turning out to be the most expensive concert i’ve ever paid for : ) If you include plane ticket, 3 day pass, and 2 aftershow events...that adds up to wicked good time!

* Note: As of Aug. 24, 2009 there’s still Aftershow tickets available on the ACL Festival website.

Other Music (NYC):
Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue (Warp Records)
How much of British producer Stephen Wilkinson is man, and how much is machine? How can he effortlessly slides from a slinky soul lick on an electric guitar to a soft, pulsating drum machine tied to a field recording of two children squawking about secret ingredients? For Bibio, boundaries were made to be transcended. Ingenious and slyly innovative, Ambivalence Avenue soaks the electronic arena with nostalgia and flashes of sweetness.

A while back, I purchased the Radiohead “In Rainbows” Limited Box-set LP (vinyl album, art-work, and two CD-Discs). The first disc included ten songs that could be purchased online at any price. The album’s second disc included eight more songs. Of course with my luck, the second disc was defective and could not play. I tried to extract the music but was unable to get the data out. Long story short, I never got to hear what was on Disc 2. Update: “In Rainbows” Disc 2 now available. Peep the disk2 cover.

“An unnamed spokesperson for Danger Mouse says that "due to an ongoing dispute with EMI "the book of photographs will "now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: 'For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.” ”

Record Store Day

recday

On April 18, 2009, we should all go out to our local music store and purchase music on vinyl. Chairman demands it and so it shall be.

http://www.recordstoreday.com/
"This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on.

...

NOTE:
A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a physical retailer whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation. (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores—not online retailers or corporate behemoths)."

With keyboards, FX and percussion played by the band themselves, they bring their distinct brand of funk to the dance floor.

Ratatat
Presented by Foundation & House of Blues. $15.25 adv/ $18.25 day of show. Doors at 8pm/9 pm show.
"Ratatat fuse hip hop beats with spectacular acrobatic guitar riffs as well as a satisfying amount of the blips and glips of electronica. And they do it well."

* The quote above came from the flyer advert, but i'm not sure what "blips and glips" means? I'm guessing "beeps and blips" is what they intended to say.

April 14, 2009
Digable Planets (SHOW CANCELLED)
plus guests Common Market & DJ BMF (8th Dim./The Social)
Doors at 9:00PM, $15.00, 18 and up.

* I'm disappointed in the cancellation. I saw Digable Planets perform their reunion tour and though, "they're still on point". Blowout Comb was one of those albums that realigned my thoughts about hip hop music vs. commercial rap (aka crap).

Doors at 7:00PM, $30.00 advance / $35.00 day of show, All Ages. Tickets available at the door, the Hard Rock Live Box Office, and Ticketmaster locations.

Isis
Doors at 8:00PM, $12.00 advance / $14.00 day of show, 18 and up. Tickets available at the Social Box Office, the door, and Ticketmaster locations.

The music of ISIS is a suitable metaphor for their 12-year career: patient, meticulous, fraught with tensionand gradually building towards an apex of seismic proportions. From the hypnotically bludgeoning down-tuned riffs of their early years to the gracefully sprawling passages on their pivotal sophomore album Oceanic and continuing through the intricate rhythmic textures and increased melody of 2006's In The Absence of Truth, ISIS have successfully navigated the process of growing and evolving without disavowing their initial vision.

The Flying Cup Club

I'm a little confused by Beirut's, "The Flying Cup Club", the second album mystery title. It was prereleased on iTunes back in September 2007 and was officially released on 4AD as "The Flying Club Cup" in October 2007. If you look at the album art work, the title is "The Flying Club Cup", which is what i've always called it. The last song in the album is entitled, "The Flying Club Cup". We would assume that the album title would match the song name, but in iTunes they're different. I doubt CDDB is incorrect, but Ba Da Ding!'s website uses "Club Cup". I'm led to more doubt by asking, what does club cup mean? I'm not sure if there's a typo or a change that was made somewhere along the line. Nevertheless, it's still a beautiful album and worth the purchase. If anyone has an answer, please straighten me out.

Read the Apple iTunes review and check how the review doesn't match the title.

New Beirut Album

March of the Zapotec by Beirut is available now. The double-EP explores Oaxaca, Mexico. Local support also comes from a 19-piece funeral band. The second disc, “Holland” features five tracks from Condon’s electro-pop project (Realpeople). Strange mix of songs for an album, but fulfilling nonetheless.

Supreme Balloon

Among the many “Best of Albums”, the Supreme Balloon album by Matmos was not voted by critics. I am not a real critic, but as a hardcore music consumer, I would have added Supreme Balloon to my list (under ‘electronica’). The Civil War LP was originally my favorite album, but Matmos have persuaded me to think otherwise by releasing a more accessible album. That’s not to say that the experimental sounds aren’t there. The glitchy bit-crush and knob-twiddling extravaganzas we’ve grown to love is still apparent. The major difference for me, is that melody seems to be a key element this time. They used a varying list of vintage instruments: Arp, Korg, Roland, Waldorf, Moog, Electro-Comp, Doepfer, Akai, Suzuki Omnichord, Coupigny, EVI/Electronic Voice Instrument. Guest performers include Jay Lesser, Jon Leidecker (aka Wobbly), Marshall Allen of the Sun Ra Arkestra, concert pianist Sarah Cahil, and Keith Fullerton Whitman. Note: the vinyl release included three bonus tracks. "Hashish Master" features a solo synth improvisation from minimalist Terry Riley. Keep vinyl alive folks!

The lead song, “Rainbow Flag” moves with such comic and delight, that I swear I hear Danny Elfman. “Les Folies Françaises” sounds more like a Wendy Carlos-Matmos collaboration. The title song, Supreme Balloon floats around 24 minutes of manipulated synths and quirky rhythms. Mister Mouth would please IDM kids or any fan of Mr. Ozio or Maurice Fulton.

* Extra Bit: Current 93’s EP, “Black Ships Heat the Dancefloor” was remixed by Matmos and released back in June 08’. Check “The Beautiful Dancing Dust” remix.

R.I.A.A.'s New Strategy

In the Top Tech Stories of The Wall Street Journal, Fri. Dec. 19, 2008, a decision by The Recording Industry Association of America (R.I.A.A.) to combat music piracy, is asking Internet Service Providers for assistance. How will it work?

“Depending on the agreement, the ISP will either forward the note to customers, or alert customers that they appear to be uploading music illegally, and ask them to stop. If the customers continue the file-sharing, they will get one or two more emails, perhaps accompanied by slower service from the provider. Finally, the ISP may cut off their access altogether. “

Señor Coconut

I love the sexy album cover! Upon closer inspection, I noticed something weird about it. I located a high-res version of the cover and found that it had been edited (probably with the clone-tool in Photoshop). Click on the picture above to view the high-res version. Look around the girl’s forehead. See the mistake. I saw different versions of the same cover on the web. Some did not show the editing mistake, while others did (including Apple iTunes).
