Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue (Warp Records)
How much of British producer Stephen Wilkinson is man, and how much is machine? How can he effortlessly slides from a slinky soul lick on an electric guitar to a soft, pulsating drum machine tied to a field recording of two children squawking about secret ingredients? For Bibio, boundaries were made to be transcended. Ingenious and slyly innovative, Ambivalence Avenue soaks the electronic arena with nostalgia and flashes of sweetness.

A while back, I purchased the Radiohead “In Rainbows” Limited Box-set LP (vinyl album, art-work, and two CD-Discs). The first disc included ten songs that could be purchased online at any price. The album’s second disc included eight more songs. Of course with my luck, the second disc was defective and could not play. I tried to extract the music but was unable to get the data out. Long story short, I never got to hear what was on Disc 2. Update: “In Rainbows” Disc 2 now available. Peep the disk2 cover.

Andy Warhol Personalities features Polaroid photographs in the Permanent Collection taken by Warhol during the 1980’s of socialites, celebrities, and patrons, including Carolina Herrera, Pia Miller, and Ric Ocasek. For Warhol, these photos served as a kind of “sketchbook,” a quick way to record source material for future use. One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) figured prominently in the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, which saw a shift away from traditional distinctions between fine art and popular culture. His renown as a painter, printmaker, and filmmaker, however, was often overshadowed by his “celebrity lifestyle.” The Polaroids on view document his diverse social circle as well as his creative process.
