MICR

The MICR typeface is a new discovery for me. I've always noticed the modern-looking typeface on my checks, but until now i've come to believe the typeface-font is truly ingenious. I found out that when M-agnetic I-nk C-haracter R-ecognition was designed, each character had to be designed to contain enough iron oxide for all the magnetized letters in the alphabet and numbers 0-9. That's balance in design and gotta love the rounded corners. It feels more human, you know.

WIKIPEDIA.ORG:

Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, or MICR, is a character recognition technology used primarily by the banking industry to facilitate the processing of cheques. The technology allows computers to read information (such as account numbers) off of printed documents. Unlike barcodes or similar technologies, however, MICR codes can be easily read by humans.

MICR characters are printed in special typefaces with a magnetic ink or toner, usually containing iron oxide. As a machine decodes the MICR text, it first magnetizes the characters in the plane of the paper. Then the characters are then passed over a MICR read head, a device similar to the playback head of a tape recorder. As each character passes over the head it produces a unique waveform that can be easily identified by the system.

The use of magnetic printing allows the characters to be read reliably even if they have been overprinted or obscured by other marks, such as cancellation stamps. The error rate for the magnetic scanning of a typical check is smaller than with optical character recognition systems. For well printed MICR documents, the "can't read" rate is usually less than 1% while the substitution rate (misread rate) is in the order of 1 per 100,000 characters.
MICR is standardized by ISO 1004:1995.

A Serious Movie

Choice movie to see, A Serious Man by the Coen Brothers. The title makes the movie sound like a melancholy drama flick, which one could say if you only factored-in the subject matter, but A Serious Man is just as much dark-comedy as it is drama. In my opinion, A Serious Man is a far more exciting film then "Burn After Reading" (which is the only Coen Bros. film I've ever disliked). Surprisingly, the opening night in Orlando, FL was not sold out, and it was only showing at Enzian theatre. Highly recommended and something i'll need to see again (hint: espcecially the opening sequence and how it relates to the rest of the film).

Black Dynamite

When “The Man” murders his brother, pumps heroin into local orphanages, and floods the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor, Black Dynamite is the one hero willing to fight all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.

FTC Publishes Final Guides Governing Endorsements, Testimonials - Changes Affect Testimonial Advertisements, Bloggers, Celebrity Endorsements

* Hao: It's about time The Guides were updated to reflect the changes in media. The Guides Governing Endorsements and Testimonials were last updated in 1980.

ftc.gov

"The Federal Trade Commission today announced that it has approved final revisions to the guidance it gives to advertisers on how to keep their endorsement and testimonial ads in line with the FTC Act."

"The revised Guides specify that while decisions will be reached on a case-by-case basis, the post of a blogger who receives cash or in-kind payment to review a product is considered an endorsement. Thus, bloggers who make an endorsement must disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service."
